Twinings is a UK tea and other beverages marketer including coffee, hot chocolate and malt beverages, headquartered in Andover, Hampshire. The brand is owned by United Foods. It has the oldest corporate logo in the world that continues to be used and is London's oldest taxpayer, occupying the same premises in strand since 1706. Twinings tea varieties include black, green and herbal teas, as well as fruit-based cold brew teas.

The origin of Twinings tea

The Twining family originated in Gloucestershire, where they worked as weavers and millers. Although their relationship with the county dates back centuries, the recession caused the family to move to London in 1684. They went with them was Thomas Twining, a 9-year-old tea founder.

Twinings was founded by Thomas Twining of Painswick, Gloucestershire, England, who opened Britain's first known teahouse in 1706 at No.216 Strand, London. It is still functioning today. Created in 1787, the company's logo is the oldest in the world to continue to use it.

Twinings received royal authorisation from Queen Victoria in 1838. Since then, It has held royal mandates from successive British monarchs. Twinings is the owner of the Royal Mandate and was acquired by United Foods in 1964.

In 2005, Twinings launched the first generic non-specialty tea under the brand "Everyday Tea". In 2006, it started producing canned chocolate drinks. In 2007, it also brought a line of canned coffee to the market.

In April 2008, Twinings announced the decision to close its Nambarrie plant in Belfast, a tea company with more than 140 years of history. Driven by efficiency, Twinings moved most of its production to China and Poland at the end of 2011, while retaining its factories in Andover, Hampshire, and reducing its workforce.

Twinings' Ethical Tea Program, Sourced with Care, aims to improve the quality of life in the communities in which it buys tea. The company is a founding member of the Ethical Tea Partnership, a non-profit member organization of the Tea Packaging Company, responsible for monitoring and improving tea plantation conditions in all major tea growing areas. Twinings has developed a Code of Ethical Conduct and works with all packaging and raw material suppliers to ensure good working conditions in the supply chain.
